2L170-15j Solenoid Valve – Frequently Asked Questions
Find answers to the most common questions about the 2L170-15 direct-acting solenoid valve, covering compatibility, operation, voltage selection, and more.
Is the 2L170-15j solenoid valve suitable for drinking water?
The standard 2L170-15 features a brass body and NBR seal. While it performs well in general water systems, air lines, and small-scale fluid control applications, it is not NSF-certified for potable (drinking) water. It is best suited for industrial machinery, pneumatic automation, and general water circulation systems.
Does the 2L170-15j require a minimum pressure to operate?
No. The 2L170-15 is a direct-acting valve, which means it operates effectively from 0 PSI. This makes it highly reliable for low-pressure gravity-fed systems, small pumps, or applications where consistent upstream pressure cannot be guaranteed.
Normally Closed (NC) vs. Normally Open (NO) – what’s the difference?
The 2L170-15 is typically configured as Normally Closed (NC), meaning the valve remains closed when de-energized and opens when the coil is energized. This provides a critical safety feature: in the event of a power loss, the valve automatically shuts off fluid flow, helping to prevent leaks or overflows in your system.
How do I choose the correct voltage for my 2L170-15j valve?
The coil voltage must match your power source. Common options include:
- 12V DC / 24V DC – Ideal for battery-powered automation or mobile applications.
- 110V AC / 220V AC – Standard for industrial control panels, residential, and commercial setups.
⚠️ Important: Always verify that your power supply matches the voltage specified on the valve coil label to avoid overheating or coil failure.
Can I use the 2L170-15j for diesel or light oil?
Yes. The NBR seal is compatible with diesel, light oils, and other non-corrosive liquids. However, avoid using this valve with highly aggressive chemicals or high-temperature steam (exceeding 80°C). For applications involving aggressive media or elevated temperatures, please contact us to discuss an FKM (Viton®) seal upgrade option.
